A Day in the Life

A day in the Life of Declan!

Declan is my current dog.  He is a lab-hound mix and a rescue.  He is my “Wild Child”.  He wakes up early- about 5:15 and loves to run around the yard either chasing squirrels or ‘defending’ the yard from the next door neighbors puppy by running up and down the fence line barking back and forth with her. He is scared of most animals, so the puppy has been a challenge for him, but also has been good for him as he does enjoy their little jaunts up and down the fence-line.  Cassie loves him as well, she found ways to sneak under the fence to play with him a couple of times before she got too big. Declan can run like the wind and can jump from the ground to deck as if he is flying.

Declan loves the snow, and running in the snow.  He has the hound bark and is afraid of the water despite his Labrador genes.  He spent the first 6 months of life in my house not sleeping.  I suspect he spent a lot of time out in the woods/wild and as a result was afraid of any noise.  He would close his eyes at night, but would pop them open at the slightest sound.  Half the time he would jump up, ready to run.  He now can sleep very well at night, but still can be sensitive to noises that he hears during the night.  As a result I don’t have any images of Declan sleeping.  To this day, as soon as he hears me turn the camera on, or hears the sound of the autofocus, he is jumping up expectantly.  As the cover image shows, he is not crazy about the little autofocus motor sound on my camera.  I did manage to capture this image of Declan having a brief rest outside.

Lessons from a Senior Dog

Nancy Kieffer

Working as a pet photographer as well as volunteering in a rescue, I have been blessed with getting to know a number of senior dogs. While I lost my Midnight at a young age, I was very fortunate to have Shamus with me for many years. Shamus was my clown, but boy did he know how to live! His wisdom grew as the years pressed on. I learned that each day spent with my senior dog was a lesson on the importance of living in the present, cherishing our bond and embracing our everlasting friendship.
