All the world around me I see opportunities for change, but I often find myself pondering, “What can I do to make a difference?” The magnitude of the challenges we face at times can feel overwhelming. From global warming, to the political climate to challenges facing animal rescue, I can sometime feel at a loss. Yet, I underestimated the power of our individual actions. Little did I know that a seemingly modest idea would morph into a beautiful collaboration of a community of people.
The Contest:
Through the spirit of contribution and sharing in the pet photography community. Jessica Wasik of Bark & Gold photography shared how she was able to raise funds for her local rescue. While I did not hope to begin to aspirate to a lofty goal, I felt that the pet loving Syracuse community would rally around this idea of a calendar photo contest for our pets. Over the course of four remarkable weeks, we called on devoted pet parents to showcase their cherished companions and celebrate the boundless joy they bring. We were blessed with 25 charismatic dogs vying for a spot in our calendar. Each week our local business supporters offered mini-prizes to help challenge voters to garner more votes.
Unity and Generosity:
I was truly blessed to see the incredible unity and support from our community. Some stats:
- 25 entrants
- 141 individuals casting votes
- 4058 votes
- 6 individuals purchased spots on the monthly grid to feature their furry friend
- 4 local businesses graciously contributed mini-prizes ( Dog Daze pet Shop, Walking Miss Daisy pet Accessories, The Lucky Pupp , and Donna Atwood Art)
As a result, we rallied together to raise an awe-inspiring $3358.
The results- 13 canine winners:
After the 4 week contest, I had the privilege of capturing the spirit of our 13 winning dogs. From soulful gazes to joyful romps, each session was a joy to capture a glimpse of each dogs personality. They each had a unique story too, which was included in the calendar. These images now grace the pages of our calendar—a tribute to the love we share with our pets and our unwavering commitment to shelter animals.
