How to Capture the Sparkle of the Holidays — Even with Your Phone

Tomorrow the pumpkins will be packed away and the last of the Halloween treats will disappear. The season shifts, the air feels crisper, the light changes, and before long, we’re surrounded by twinkling lights and the scent of pine.

It’s a beautiful time to reflect, celebrate, and — of course — capture the moments that make these months feel so special.

As much as I believe in having professional photos of you and your pet, I know there are plenty of times you just want to grab your phone and document the joy right then and there — when your dog is being goofy in the snow, your cat is mesmerized by the tree, or the firelight wraps everything in warmth.

Here are a few easy ways to capture those heartwarming moments with your phone this holiday season.

1. Hold the phone still

When inspiration strikes, it’s easy to rush the shot. But small movements can make your image blurry. Plant your feet, take a breath, and hold your phone steady with both hands. If you can, brace your elbows against your body or lean against a surface. Even better, try a small tripod for your phone.

2. Get down low

Some of the most engaging pet portraits are taken at their eye level. Crouch or kneel so you’re seeing the world the way they do — it brings a sense of connection and intimacy to the photo.

3. Face toward the light

If your pet’s features are hidden in shadow, turn them toward the light. A bright window or soft shade outside is ideal. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight or your phone’s flash, which can wash out detail or cause glowing eyes.

4. Keep it simple

Your pet should be the focus. Look for uncluttered backgrounds that won’t compete for attention — a blanket, a simple wall, or even a stretch of snow.

5. Capture connection, not perfection

The best photos happen in between moments — a head tilt, a tail wag, or that look of adoration only your pet can give. Don’t overthink it; focus on joy over perfection. Reward your pet and keep things playful.

Bonus: Print your favorites

Once the season passes, printed images will help you relive the warmth of these days. Frame a few or send them as holiday cards to spread the joy.

As we step from Halloween’s playfulness into the heart of the holidays, take a moment to slow down and notice the small things — the light, the laughter, the love at your feet. Those are the memories that matter most.
