I enjoyed a day down in Ithaca this weekend. After snowshoeing with friends, I decided to travel over to Taughannock Falls ( pronounced Tuh-Ga- nick) to see how the ice has formed on it this year. Taughannock has a lower trail which leads back to the falls, but it also has an observation point a little further up the road in which you can have a higher vantage point for the 215 foot drop. I decided to head to the observation area first. I was lucky enough to get some shots of some hikers traveling along the lower trail…and then out onto the frozen water. I love how these individuals provided the sense of scale of the falls. Since it seemed the lower trail was open, I then went down to the lower parking lot to hike back myself. I found a sign indicating “DANGER-Trail Closed” and a policeman at ticketing all those hikers who had wandered up the trail. I provided a shot from Autumn to provide some comparison.
